How to get a bike

The easiest way to get from Skjoldhøjkollegiet to the shops, the university, the business-school and anywhere else is by bike. There are three ways to get a bike.

1. Buy one. The most exspensive solution, and if you buy a cheap bike in a shop you usually have to put the parts together yourself. On the other hand, you can buy a bike and sell it, when you leave.

2. Rent a bike. It's cheaper and the rental company will fix the bike, when it has a flat tire or other small failures.

You can rent a bike here and here. Make sure the bike has a good solid lock.

We have been told you can rent a bike from Studenterhuset. We don't have the details but check it out.

3. Visit the police auction. The first wednesday in every month, the local police station puts all the stolen, found, or maybe wrecked bikes on auction and it is by far the cheapest way to get a bike. But! It is all WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get). So come early and take a good look at the bikes before you buy anything. You might get a really good bike for a few hundred kroner or you might get an overpriced piece of junk. And there is no refund. What is bought is bought.

We can't be sure, it is EVERY first wednesday in a month, so make sure you check out the auction dates here. ('cykel og knallertauktion' is what you are looking for).

Hint: Bring a puncture kit and a set of tire irons. Sometimes all that is wrong with a very good bike is one or two flat tires. And sometimes you can get that bike very cheap because no one else wants a bike with a flat tire. So buy it, spend fifteen minutes on mending the tire and you have yourself a nice ride.

Generally: if you plan on buying a bike at the auction; bring some tools and some WD40 (the perfect grease for pretty much everything). After you have bought what looks like a good bike, spend some time checking out the bolts and pieces and put some grease on the chain, the (hand)brakes, the gears and the bike in general. Half and hour later you can ride your bike home. It works better than not fixing it, riding it home and maybe ruining it in the process.

The police auction takes place here. Bus 15 will take you there (get off at Marselis Boulevard). We don't know the time of day the auction takes place, so call the place at 86 14 86 15 and ask.
